The brief for the 2011 award was to create a 6m x 4m garden which is the part of a larger garden in which to relax and unwind. The conditions for the garden were that it should represent the growing environment on the coast of England with the site being 4 miles from the coast in an area of high rainfall, with average summer temperatures of 22°C and minimum winter temperatures of -5°C. The students were given the choice of two soil types: moisture retentive soil or free draining soil.

At the time of judging 'Coastal Drift' stood out as the theme of the garden was very strong and almost gave a picture of the garden without seeing the initial visual plan. The judges were most impressed by the use of different heights and the concept.
Susan and Adele are currently awaiting confirmation of the garden 'Coastal Drift' for inclusion in the small garden category in Hampton Court 2012 from the RHS judging panel. Confirmation should be received by end of Feb / March - keep up to date by twitter and facebook.
The size of the garden this year has been increased this coming year to 7 x 5m.
It's going to be an interesting and exciting year for Susan and Adele as they build up towards Hampton Court in Summer 2012.
After winning the Student Design & Build Award in 2011 monthly meetings are being held at Wyevale East Nurseries to discuss plant choices, construction and publicity options.
