Found in the forests of Chile.

Description: An unusual, evergreen branched shrub with upright shoots and very dark green leaves. In late spring lantern / urn shaped pendant red flowers are produced and hang down from the underside of the branches. The flowers stalks appear in the autumn but do not open until the following spring.

 
Climate / Position: Prefers partial shade. Can tolerate full sun as long as the roots are kept cool and shaded.

Height / Spread: Height 6m, spread 5m.

Soil Requirements: Prefers a moist, well-drained, humus-rich acid soil.

Pruning: Remove dead wood in the spring.

Special Requirements: Shelter from cold winds.

 
Crinodendron hookeriana was first introduced in 1848 by William Lobb.

 
Awarded an AGM in 1993 for hardiness.
